An airport fire station built in hybrid steel at Gaya, Bihar. A steel primary frame carries the vehicle bay, and light gauge steel framing forms the insulated walls and roof around it. Designed, fabricated and erected by Jadro Steel from our own factory at Panchla, Howrah.

A building that has to work in minutes

A fire station is judged on one thing: how fast a tender gets out of the door. That makes the vehicle bay the whole design. It has to be clear across its full width, with no internal column a driver has to steer around, and tall enough for the appliance with its equipment mounted. Everything else on the building — crew quarters, watch room, stores — arranges itself around that bay.

A steel primary frame does this naturally. The span is carried overhead, the floor stays empty, and the door opening is engineered into the frame rather than cut into a wall afterwards.

Why the envelope mattered as much as the frame

Gaya summers are severe, and a crew on standby occupies the building for a full shift. A plain sheeted shed would have been faster and cheaper to build and uncomfortable to sit in for eight hours. Framing the walls and roof in light gauge steel gave us a cavity to insulate properly, so the crew quarters behave like a building rather than a metal box in the sun.

That combination — a heavy frame for the span, a light frame for the skin — is what we call a Steel Structure Building. It is not two systems bolted together as an afterthought. It is one structure where each part does the job it is actually good at.

Built in Howrah, erected in Bihar

Every section was cut, punched and marked at our Panchla factory before it left, and delivered numbered in erection order. On a site several hundred kilometres from the plant, that sequencing is not a convenience — it is the difference between a crew assembling a building and a crew sorting through a pile of steel looking for the next piece.

Fabrication ran while the foundation was cast, so the two jobs happened at once instead of one waiting on the other.
